NCB Now: Young people want more issue-led TV

Children and young people of all ages enjoy watching EastEnders and The Simpsons - but they also want more issue-led programming aimed at their age groups.

These were some of the views expressed by children and young people taking part in a one-day consultation, Your BBC, Your Say, at London Zoo earlier this month. The event, organised by NCB on behalf of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, was attended by culture secretary Tessa Jowell.

During the consultation over 60 children and young people aged 12 to 18 discussed a range of issues, including the way young people are portrayed in BBC programmes, and how we can make sure that the BBC listens to the public, especially young people.

"Lots of young people want to be able to comment on BBC programmes but they don't feel they are given the opportunity," explained Mohammed Fajolu, one of three Young NCB members who facilitated discussion groups at the event. "They suggested a freephone number so they can call in with their views.
