NCB Now: Disabled children should be a priority

1 min read
Every Disabled Child Matters (EDCM) is calling for local authorities to make the national indicator on disabled children a priority in their local area agreements.

The creation of the disabled children's indicator - National Indicator 54 in the revised local government indicator set - is a key outcome of the government's review of disabled children's services in England, Aiming High for Disabled Children. Local authorities and partner agencies will choose 35 from the 196 indicators in the national set to become their local priorities.

Steve Broach, EDCM campaign manager, said: "Disabled children have never been a priority for local government, which is one of the reasons why their services have been patchy and inadequate. The new indicator is a chance to correct this. We will be expecting all the councils signed up to our charter to respond, and we hope all other councils will take their lead."
