NCB Now: Support for Short Breaks Bill

2 mins read
Following a new commitment to disabled children and their families by the government, Every Disabled Child Matters (EDCM) is launching a Bill that would give disabled children and their families a legal right to short break care.

The adoption of the Disabled Children (Family Support) Bill 2007 would ensure a specific duty is placed on local authorities to provide short break care for families with disabled children who provide a high level of care.

Last year, EDCM was supported by Gary Streeter MP for southwest Devon, who sponsored the campaign's first Private Members Bill. The 2006 Bill put the issue of support for families with disabled children firmly on the government's agenda.

Steve Broach, EDCM campaign manager comments: "Through Aiming High for Disabled Children, the Government has shown it is serious about improving the lives of disabled children and their families. We are delighted with the new investment of £280m, which will start to deliver a step change in the way short break services are delivered.
