Disability: Short Breaks Bill clears first hurdle

A draft Bill to give families of disabled children rights to short break care has cleared its first hurdle in Parliament.

Gary Streeter, the Conservative MP for Devon South West, agreed topropose the Short Breaks Bill after he came fourth in a parliamentarydraw to decide which MPs can propose private members' Bills.

The Bill will now be debated in Parliament for the first time inJanuary.

If it is to survive, 100 MPs must attend the debate and support the Billif a vote is called.

Francine Bates, chief executive for Contact a Family, one of the fourorganisations behind the Every Disabled Child Matters campaign thatdrafted the Bill, said Government support is needed. But, she added, atthe moment this was an "unknown quantity".

"We don't know if we'll get Government support because there will becost implications."
