Disability: Campaigners draft short breaks Bill

1 min read
Disabled children's campaigners have drafted a Bill that would give families with disabled children a minimum entitlement to short breaks.

The Disabled Children's Short Breaks Bill has been drawn up by the EveryDisabled Child Matters campaign and will be officially launched on 21November. The campaigners hope that it will be adopted by a backbench MPand become a private member's Bill.

The ballot for private members' Bills takes place on 23 November. Allbackbench MPs can enter and those who come in the top 10 will come underpressure from a variety of organisations to adopt a Bill on theirbehalf. Children Now understands that around 100 MPs have now expressedan interest in the Bill.

The lack of breaks for carers was highlighted in the recentTreasury-commissioned report on services for disabled children (ChildrenNow, 1-7 November).
