What does Thames21 do? Thames21 runs a programme called Waterway Champions - a three-year project aimed at young people aged 16 to 25, funded by V and run by Thames21. It provides one-off events and training opportunities to encourage young people to volunteer to help improve their local river or canal. Activities include rubbish removal, habitat creation, invasive species removal and training days.
In their words, the project does great youth work because it provides opportunities for young people to connect with their local environment and make a positive improvement to it in a short space of time. The project has been running since April 2008 and employs a full-time project manager and a part-time event support officer. With larger events, staff from the wider organisation support the activities. Our opportunities bring people from different backgrounds together in a fun and sociable way. The project has involved nearly 2,000 young people from all over London.
