Getaway Girls creates a warm, creative and safe environment for young women, which enables them to build confidence, develop new skills and take positive risks in an environment that offers co-operation and support.
This is achieved using an innovative combination of activities, including adventure education, creative arts and issue-based group work.
In their words: "We have been making a difference to young women's lives in Leeds since 1987. Our inclusive and innovative youth work approach places young women in the control centre of their own experience and learning. We listen to, act on and respect the opinions, needs and interests of the young women, and challenge them to challenge us. We build on young women's strengths and offer them opportunities for participation and leadership with lots of support and training. Our staff, volunteers and peer educators are positive role models from diverse cultural backgrounds who are committed to helping young women grow, learn and take positive risks. Many of the young women become youth and community workers and move on to support other young women.
