National Youth Agency: Youth Work Week case study: CHIVA Projects

1 min read
Chiva Projects was established in 2009 to provide excellent care to young people affected by Aids - prior to this, Chiva (Children's HIV Association) was a network for practitioners offering health and social care to HIV-positive children and young people.

Since setting up only a year and a half ago, its trained youth workers have engaged with more than 100 HIV-positive young people from across the UK and Ireland, a quarter of whom are aged between 13 and 18.

To support the organisation's growing needs it employs six part-time staff and recruited and trained over 40 volunteers, half of whom were adults living with HIV.

Many of Chiva Projects' activities are residential to bring young people from different geographical areas together. In August 2010, the volunteers ran a summer camp for 100 young people to come together in a fun environment and engage in workshops on a variety of areas, relating to living well with HIV.
