The Children and Young People HIV Network aims to challenge the stigma and discrimination associated with HIV through building child-centred and effective policy and practice, holding events, training, and providing information.
It undertakes collaborative work with voluntary, statutory and community-based organisations such as Body and Soul, Positive Parenting and Children, Barnardo's, National Aids Trust and the Terrence Higgins Trust.
There are around 1,500 children and young people under the age of 19 living with HIV in the UK. Just over half are female, and 77 per cent are of black African ethnicity. Almost all were infected through mother-to-baby transmission and 59 per cent access care in London. The majority are involved in the immigration system and, due to dispersal policies, many families and children living with HIV are placed in areas that often don't have the specialist services necessary to support their unique needs.
