Letter: The truancy dilemma

1 min read
In the wake of the plans unveiled by schools minister Jacqui Smith for an intensive drive against some 8,000 persistent truants, Parentline Plus would once again like to reiterate the need to support parents, not punish them.

The Fast Track to Attendance scheme, where an automatic courtprosecution will be triggered unless the child's attendance improvesover a 12-week period, centres on blaming parents since they are theones threatened with fines or prison.

We know from our research that there are many complex issues around whychildren truant and parents panicked by the threat of imprisonment arenot being given the skills and support they need to stop children doingit. Parents can make a real difference but only if given the support todo so.

Parentline Plus has campaigned for many years for sustained investmentin parent and family support. This has, ironically, often led to parentsgetting the help they have always asked for only because of theirchild's anti-social and criminal behaviour.
