Letters: Don't ignore parents

1 min read
Parentline Plus welcomes the recommendations, made in a report by the Independent Advisory Group on Sexual Health and HIV, for a more joined-up Government approach to tackle drugs, alcohol misuse and risky sexual behaviour by young people.

We are concerned, however, that the pivotal influence of parents inreducing the level of risky behaviours in their children is nothighlighted in the report.

One of the focuses of our work is to encourage parents to talk openlywith their children about sex and relationships and to help them withstrategies and ideas to get the message across about the risks of bingedrinking, drug taking and unsafe sex.

Parents are aware of the pressures and influences on today's youngpeople and want help in giving their children guidance and support tocounter negative influences.

Parentline Plus would be delighted to work with those taking forward thereport's findings and to ensure that parents are and empowered to helptheir children make informed and responsible decisions.
