Letter: Extended services,

1 min read
ContinYou welcomes Ofsted's report on extended services in schools and children's centres (Children Now, 26 July-1 August).

It celebrates the examples of excellent practice and significantoutcomes that ContinYou's extended services team is finding in growingnumbers across the country and adds significantly to the definition ofwhat "good" looks like in the development of services andactivities.

We are delighted that the report acknowledges the work of schools andtheir partners that is transforming the lives of children andfamilies.

The report also highlights the importance of the strategic role of localauthorities and highlights some issues of continuity between children'scentres and schools as well as the difficulties created by short-termfunding. However, many local authority strategies are now in place, asare strategic partnerships with the community and voluntary sectors andother agencies. As a result, schools now find themselves in a strongerposition to plan longer term.

ContinYou's extended services team will continue to work with schools, local authorities, agencies and Ofsted to support the development ofservices in and around schools that really engage those who havebenefited least from education in the past so that they are better ableto take control of their lives and improve the outcomes for themselvesand their children.

Julian Piper, extended services director, ContinYou.
