Letter: Invest in extended services

ContinYou welcomes many of the positive provisions of the Education Bill (Children Now, 8-14 March). But despite great progress, too many parents are still not able to make informed and genuine choices, and too many young people leave school without qualifications because too little attention is given to their needs. The Bill provides another step forward in addressing these issues.

Achievement is not solely determined by what happens in the classroom. The provision of extended services is a vital component of awhole-community approach to learning, and so we welcome the emphasis onencouraging trust schools to develop partnerships with externalorganisations. While the Bill does not explicitly refer to extendedschools, we hope the forthcoming spending review will reinforce the needto invest in the quality of these services.

Laurence Blackhall, chief executive, ContinYou.
