Letter - School freedom and flexibility

1 min read
I was pleased to learn that Dr Christopher Arnold, a senior educational psychologist, has been highlighting to ministers the importance of ensuring schools' extended services provide a home-like rather than classroom-like environment (Children Now, 11-17 January).

ContinYou, the community learning charity, shares this vision and hasfound that the key behind offering a service that children will findappealing and attractive, is to ensure it provides them with freedom andflexibility, while also offering parents and carers the peace of mind offormal childcare.

One aspect of ContinYou's work is to support schools and localauthorities in further developing their study support and out-of-schoolhours learning provision. This provision makes a significant impact on aschool, its pupils and the wider community.

Benefits include increased confidence, attainment and attendance as wellas improved behaviour.

To ensure these outcomes are experienced, the clubs need to offer a widerange of fun and inclusive learning activities that children want toattend.
