Letter: Learning outside the classroom

1 min read
The Government's manifesto for learning outside the classroom (Children Now, 29 November-5 December) goes a long way to addressing the concerns teachers and parents have about safety on school trips.

Every trip, even just down the road, has its hazards. Yet field tripsand visits to galleries and theatres are often remembered by youngpeople long after they have left school. They bring far wider benefitsthan the straightforward subject learning that takes place.

But a guarantee of access to outside activities for all young peopleshould be funded and built into the system. And school trips should notbe part of the inspection system. A school in a deprived area cannotcompete with one in an area where parents can easily afford the costs.Coercing teachers into organising what are largely voluntary activitieswould undermine the goodwill on which these activities rely.
