Letter: Children's play in school

1 min read
I read your article about children's play being left out of the core offer of extended services in and around schools (Children Now, 30 August-5 September).

National learning charity ContinYou is working to ensure each localauthority in England recognises the importance of services in and aroundschools. Play opportunities are a significant part of this.

ContinYou and SkillsActive have discussed and implemented ways in whichregional teams can support development in each region. Many areas havealready shown how play adds value to the services provided andexperienced as part of extended schools.

Lottery funding is important in combining play and extendedservices.

Perhaps practice is leading policy, not the other way around. Like theChildren's Play Council, ContinYou feels that the Department of Culture,Media and Sport's document, Time for play, is a step in the rightdirection.
