Letter: Mentoring can save lives

I enjoy reading your magazine and was especially interested in Social Claire's article on mentoring (Children Now, 18-24 October).

For the past 18 years, I have run a mentoring and befriending projectfor socially excluded children from isolated, lone-parent families.Mentoring is increasingly recognised as a valuable intervention foryoung people who lack someone to talk with when things feel overwhelmingor very difficult.

This point echoes the findings of The Samaritans, which recently lookedinto why so many young men attempt suicide. It concluded that theydidn't have anyone in which to confide openly about their feelings.
