Letter: Looked-after children

1 min read
Your report on the Handle with Care study did not comment on the study's mostly negative and stereotypical portrayal of both looked-after children and social workers (Children Now, 27 September-3 October).

The study leaves me with a feeling that we have once again presentedlooked-after children as victims. In outlining only the things that arewrong with the care system, the study does little to recognise the greatefforts made by so many social workers and foster carers to supportlooked-after children.

We all agree that the care system needs to improve and that we mustimprove outcomes for looked-after children. But if we are going to dothis then we must start by supporting our social workers and fostercarers better.

If anyone can improve the care system, they can. The forthcoming greenpaper on looked-after children gives us all an opportunity to changethings for the better - let's make sure we give it our best shot.
