Determining the appropriate stage at which to teach a skill to a classof 30 is no easy task. Children's abilities differ and they develop atdifferent rates. Asking whether children should start learning to readat the age of four or five misses the point since there is no rightage.
To attempt to teach a child to read before he or she is ready can beintensely frustrating for the child and teacher alike. Equally, it canbe exasperating for a child to be held back from reading when he or sheis ready to learn.
Education provision should be tailored to the individual's needs andabilities.
