Extended schools: Schools told to sell their services

Schools should be encouraged to sell their services to fund extended provision, according to a director at ContinYou.

Speaking at last week's Children Now conference on the funding andsustainability of extended schools, Julian Piper, extended servicesdirector of ContinYou, said: "The implications are that Governmentfunding for extended services will continue. But schools should look tosell their services and develop a niche market."

Piper suggested hiring out school premises and putting on events such asbusiness breakfasts and birthday parties to raise cash.

Martin Ward, deputy general secretary of the Association of School andCollege Leaders, welcomed the suggestion, calling it a "sensible idea".
