Why? Bookstart is a national programme that encourages all parents and carers to enjoy books with their children from as early an age as possible. The theme for this year's national day was My Favourite Rhyme. The trip to the farm gave children the chance to bring some of their favourite nursery rhymes to life. They re-enacted classics such as Old MacDonald's Farm and Jack and Gill. They also listened to the noises the animals on the farm made and had a go at making some of the sounds themselves.
How did it go? The visit was particularly special for a number of the children, who had never been to a real farm before. It has inspired the children and their parents to continue the theme of the farmyard through reading, speaking and listening in the weeks following the visit. Zoe Wood, deputy manager of the centre, said: "Many of our toddlers have never seen or heard a tractor before apart from in books, so the experience of visiting a real farm brought the books and rhymes to life."
