Why? The group aims to give young mums and dads practical parenting skills in an area where teenage pregnancy rates are high. Staff at Basford Children's Centre hope to provide a family-led support network.
What happens? Parents learn practical skills including first aid, baby massage, and cooking for toddlers. They can also attend taster courses in areas such as child development, interior design and construction, and take advantage of careers advice. Their children, meanwhile, enjoy creative activities such as playing with sand, painting, and making collages: ideas which parents can copy at home.
New College Nottingham staff hope the taster courses will give parents the confidence to consider returning to education.
How did the launch go? At the launch last month, 23 parents brought their children along to share their views and help shape future sessions. Basford Children's Centre manager Lawrence Jackson said: "We had a wonderful response, the parents were really enthused."
