The school provided the group with a patch of land and staff from Groundwork helped the families to prepare the plot. Over five weeks, dads and their children planted and tended the garden and made bird feeders and scarecrows.
Why are they doing it? The dads and kids group aims to engage fathers, grandfathers, step-dads and other male carers to get more involved in their children's lives. Raj Singh, extended services manager for children's services at Sunderland City Council, says: "The sessions help children to get active and spend time with a positive male role model, which has been proven to be very beneficial for a child's development."
