Lead professional

Where you might hear it: From anyone who works with children and young people.

What does it mean: A lead professional is someone who works with a child or young person who has additional needs and requires support from more than one agency or practitioner. It is the job of the lead professional to act as a single point of contact for the child and family and offer personalised support packages, which helps deliver multi-agency services in the most effective way. Children who are appointed lead professionals can include looked-after children, those with statements of special educational needs and young people involved with youth offending teams.
