Work Wise: Jargon buster

Have you sat through an entire meeting and wondered what your colleagues are rambling on about? Use our handy jargon guide to find out what they mean.

YISPs (Youth inclusion and support panels)

Where you might hear it: Anyone involved in youth justice will be familiar with YISPs.

What does it mean: YISPs are multi-agency planning groups run by youth offending teams and include representatives from social services, the police and schools. They exist to ensure that eight- to 13-year-olds at risk of offending have access to services that could reduce the likelihood of them getting involved in crime. Families are encouraged to work with YISPs on a voluntary basis.

How to use it: Contact your local youth offending team to ask if your area has a YISP. If it does, see if you could become a member. If not, find out how to set one up.
