Carlisle South recently won the 4Children Children's Centre Team of theYear award and was commended for being "imaginative, committed andpassionate about the community".

There is a strong participation ethos and the team is built on communitydevelopment principles. "The team structure is as level as possible sopeople feel valued and can have their say," says programme manager LyndaHassall. "People are expected to take a high level of responsibility,which generates commitment."

Regular team meetings and development days, Hassall's open-door policyand a mentoring system for new staff all help foster communication. Theteam does not work in isolation but collaborates closely with otheragencies.
