Best Practice: Sure Start children's centres tackle postnatal depression

1 min read
Sure Start children's centres help with parenting problems that can be experienced by all families, regardless of their social background. This is one of the main reasons why 4Children believes they should remain open for all.

Postnatal depression is the type of issue that any new parent can face and one that requires sensitive, professional support in a non-judgmental environment. With this in mind, 4Children applied successfully for funding to run 10 courses across Essex for parents who are suffering with postnatal depression. The 10-week course is supported by the 4Children creche team so parents can attend knowing their children are looked after.

Parents are referred or directed to the group via the local health service or sometimes by outreach workers who work from the children's centre. Eightto 12 parents take part in the structured sessions, which are based around group discussions and counselling. Fathers or other close members of the family are also welcome to attend.
