The midwife at Sure Start Gravesham runs several activities to getmums-to-be and new mothers using the Sure Start. Activities include:breastfeeding classes; yoga; and "bumps and bubbas", where women candrop-in for a chat and a check-up.
Karen Youens, a midwife of 15 years, has worked with Sure Start since2003. She says the activities are a way of "engaging with local womenand ensuring every unborn child has the best opportunities in life andthe family to support that".
Youens recently started running yoga classes, or more preciselyYogacise, a form of yoga that is suitable for pregnancy, birth andbeyond. As well as the positive benefits of yoga itself, it provides avehicle to engage with the local community. The women who attend classesalso have the opportunity to talk to Youens about concerns regardingpregnancy and motherhood, as well as issues like stopping smoking.
