What it is: Ten-week project to help long-term prisoners who are fathers

When Sophie Johnson worked as a psychologist at HMP KirklevingtonGrange, an open prison in the north east of England, she was struck bythe high numbers of prisoners who were also fathers.

So when she moved to the council's learning development team Johnsondeveloped the Sure Start for Dads project - a series of weekly classesaddressing issues facing imprisoned fathers including anger management,communication skills, the roles of a dad, sexual health, findingemployment, gaining support and the impact of reoffending.

"Because this is an open prison, they are actually out on a daily basis,possibly going back to the family home. We provide a toolkit they canuse to build back the relationship with the family and the kids,"explains Johnson.
