Dads and Dinghies weighs anchor this month with the maiden voyage of asailing boat built by fathers and their children.

The 10,000 project saw dads and their children, aged 15 months to15 years, grapple with stitching, drilling and gluing to build thewooden dinghy from a flat-pack kit.

It was funded with cash from the Pre-School Learning Alliance'sLimelight Learning Centre and Community Education Lewisham, the adulteducation arm of the local education authority. "Fathers often findinitiatives encouraging family bonding and childcare threatening,thinking they are often oriented more towards women," says Tim Neville,a family learning officer for the alliance's Lewisham branch. "The boatbrought them together in building and learning skills."
