A project to identify the gaps for children in palliative care across the country was launched last week.

The Association of Children's Hospices and the Association forChildren's Palliative Care will examine the care available for childrenwith terminal or life-threatening conditions. The five-year scheme willbegin with a pilot project in Cheshire and Merseyside and will then beintroduced nationally.

The research is funded by a 177,000 grant from the Sainsburyfamily's True Colours Trust, which makes grants to charities supportingdisabled children and those with terminal and life-threateningillnesses.

Lizzie Chambers, chief executive of the Association for Children'sPalliative Care, said the project would help local organisations todecide what new services were needed to fill gaps and make the case forfunding.

She added it would help the charities ensure a proper spread of servicesnationally.
