Health News: Palliative care - Campaigners hope to avert fundcrisis

Campaigners for disabled children are hopeful that a looming crisis in children's palliative care funding will be averted.

The news comes ahead of a seminar on the issue next week, called atshort notice by children's health Minister Liam Byrne.

The event will focus on the end of three-year funding from the NewOpportunities Fund for children's palliative care this month.

Campaigners have expressed concern about the survival of children'spalliative care teams and specialist children's palliative carenurses.

Children's palliative care services only receive 5 per cent of theirfunding from government.

Children's leads from primary care trusts will attend the event, alongside key stakeholders including Contact a Family, the Council forDisabled Children and the Association of Children's Hospices.

Francine Bates, chief executive of Contact a Family, said she waspositive, as Byrne had been particularly "exercised" by the issue.
