1 min read
Funding for children's palliative care services could be boosted by the first guidelines for health commissioners in the sector.

However, concerns have been raised that the move may not be enough tosave some services once New Opportunities Fund money runs out nextspring.

Commissioning Children's and Young People's Palliative Care Services, launched yesterday (29 November), by care services minister Liam Byrne, has been welcomed by professionals as finally putting the sector on themap.

Barbara Gelb, chief executive of the Association of Children's Hospices'said the guide would be an important lever for funding with whichchildren's hospices could approach commissioners. In addition, sheadded, "very significant" provisions in the guidance could meanchildren's hospices secured more funding.

Children's hospices do not receive statutory funding and often have toapproach a large number of primary care trusts for money. However, theguidance suggests they will only have to deal with one local body orspecialised commissioning group.
