Health News: Primary Healthcare - PCT cuts will boost children's agenda

Children's health commissioners have predicted their role could be strengthened by proposed cuts to the numbers of primary care trusts.

News that the Government is to reduce the number of trusts was confirmed by Sir Nigel Crisp, chief executive of the NHS, at the NHS Confederation's annual conference last week.

He said cuts would take place to meet the Labour manifesto commitment of reducing management costs by 250m by 2007.

Although the extent of the cuts has yet to be announced, a root and branch review of trust structures is to be launched in the next few weeks.

Vanessa Hollins, commissioning manager for children and young people's services at Blackburn with Darwen Primary Care Trust, said: "This could have benefits in terms of increasing the capacity within trusts to deal with the children's agenda.
