13 conceptions per 1,000 girls aged 13 to 15 (8.7 in England and Wales)

8.7% of total births under 2,500g in 2000 (7.9 per cent in England and Wales)

1.8% of total births under 1,500g in 2000 (1.5 per cent in England and Wales)

A spokeswoman from Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale PCT said a number of initiatives were in place in Burnley, supported by Lancashire's Teenage Pregnancy Partnership.

They include a jointly funded teenage health project that works with the youth and community service to deliver sex and relationships education and sexual health services in schools and youth and community settings.

A Burnley Youth Theatre initiative also delivers workshops related to teenage pregnancy issues.
