71.4 conceptions per 1,000 girls aged 15 to 17 between 1997 and 1999 (52.6 in Wales)

16.7 conceptions per 1,000 girls aged 13 to 15 between 1997 and 1999 (10.2 in Wales)

6.9 infant deaths per 1,000 live births in 2001 (5.4 in Wales)

9.7% births under 2,500 grams in 2001 (7.8 per cent in Wales)

A spokesman said Blaenau Gwent LEA was "committed to addressing the issue of teenage pregnancy through the PSE schemes of work in schools". Pupils take home computerised dolls and "empathy bellies" that replicate the discomfort of pregnancy are used as a starting point for discussions.

The spokesman added: "The authority also works in close partnership with the local health board and the New Opportunities Fund to promote awareness of contraception and sexual health."
