30.6% of mothers recorded as smoking at health visitor's first visit in 1998 (29.1 per cent in Scotland)

- 28.8% of mothers recorded as smoking at health visitor's first visit in 2001 (26.8 per cent in Scotland)

- 11.1 pregnancies per 1,000 girls aged 13-15 in 1997 (9.2 in Scotland)

- 9.6 pregnancies per 1,000 girls aged 13-15 in 2001 (7.6 in Scotland)

A spokeswoman for NHS Ayrshire & Arran said: "As part of our maternity services strategy, link midwives have been identified in each clinical area and provide information through a monthly calendar of topics. A smoking cessation advisor also attends our maternity hospital every week. The New Opportunities Fund (NOF) South Ayrshire Schools Tobacco Awareness Project helps them make a positive choice not to smoke."
