Crossing Over, Camden Council, London

1 min read Education Extra-curricular
What did they do? A group of young people from Camden worked with the council's road safety team and Arc Theatre to produce an educational drama called Crossing Over. The production was performed at schools across the borough. The project was funded by Transport for London.

Why did they do it? The drama was the culmination of a research project on young people's attitudes towards road risks. The project was particularly aimed at protecting 11to 14-year-olds, the age group most likely to suffer road injuries. It also focused on young people from poorer communities, who are statistically more at risk on the roads.

What did the research find? Nearly half the young people surveyed said they sometimes or often messed around while crossing the road, 87 per cent said they sometimes or often ran across the road, 70 per cent said they talked on their mobile and 68 per cent said they listened to music. Both young people and parents wanted more road safety education in schools.
