Camden plans to launch independent education commission

1 min read Education
The London Borough of Camden is developing plans to launch an independent education commission to plan schooling in the area for the next 10 years.

The joint initiative between local schools and Camden Council will explore how the borough can make the most of the government drive to increase school autonomy.

Former Ofsted chief inspector Sir Mike Tomlinson CBE is earmarked to chair the commission. The commission’s panel will also include Professor Geoff Whitty, a former director of the Institute of Education, and Geethika Jayatilaka, who used to be Camden’s lead member for children.

The commission is expected to last for six months initially, during which time it will gather evidence from local employers, parents, children and young people in Camden.

Angela Mason, deputy leader of Camden Council, said the authority wants to re-examine its role in education to make sure that it is giving children and young people the best start in life.
