Child Poverty: Independent group readies for launch

An independent commission to fight child poverty in London could be launched as early as next month, Children Now can reveal.

It will develop practical solutions to reduce child poverty to help meetthe Government target of halving levels by 2010 and ending it by2020.

The Mayor of London Ken Livingstone and council leaders are driving theinitiative.

The formation of the commission implements a recommendation in a newreport on child poverty levels by End Child Poverty, the Association ofLondon Government and the Greater London Authority, which will belaunched at the end of February. The 2004 Capital Losses study said halfof all inner-London children live in poverty.

Caroline Abrahams, chair of End Child Poverty, said an independentcommission on child poverty was an important step forward.
