"We cannot have a strong society and a strong economy unless we addressthe problem of child poverty," he said.
All the department's future policies will be expected to contribute toreducing the problem. Hutton said that a new strategy for tackling childpoverty would be unveiled this autumn.
End Child Poverty welcomed Hutton's commitment but said every Governmentdepartment needed to follow suit if child poverty is to be halved by2010.
"It will take a concerted effort across departments if the Government isto reach its target," said Caroline Abrahams, chair of End ChildPoverty.
