What did they do? More than 100 refugee pupils from primary and secondary schools across Camden were honoured for their achievements at an awards ceremony. The children and young people received certificates from the mayor.

Many are recent arrivals in the UK and face challenges adjusting to a new language and culture as well as settling in at school. The mayor, councillor Jonathan Simpson, says: "Camden's diversity is one of its biggest strengths. It was a real pleasure to meet some of the borough's young refugees and asylum seekers and to celebrate their magnificent contributions to our schools."

Who were the winners? Nilofar Arman, 16, from Haverstock School, won an outstanding achievement award. Originally from Iran, she arrived in the UK in 2006 and gained a string of top grades in her GCSEs, including two A*s and an A. Haverstock student Pellumb Ahmetaj, 17, whose family arrived in the UK from Kosovo in 1999, was also recognised after he gained 11 GCSEs, including one A* and six As.
