Project: Camden Re-cycled Project
Mission: To divert young people away from crime and to teach skills
Funding: £2,000 start-up costs from the Safer London Foundation
Young offenders in Camden have been working to repair stolen bikes, which will be given to a care home for adults with mental health needs. Through the Camden Re-cycled Project young offenders mend and make safe bikes that have been donated free by the police after being stolen and left unreclaimed.
The idea is that young offenders both contribute to the community and learn new skills at the same time. The scheme is for young people given court reparation orders and was created in 2006 by the London borough's youth offending team along with the public safety cycle training team.
