Project: Hackney reparation project
Funding: £700,000 from the government's Youth Crime Action Plan
Aim: To encourage young offenders to turn their back on crime and develop new skills
Young offenders at a Hackney reparation project received a visit from Justice Secretary Jack Straw this month.
The young people have all been ordered to do community work by the courts as an alternative to a custodial sentence. Hackney Youth Offending Team (YOT) helps them give something back to the area and prevent reoffending.
More than £700,000 was distributed to Hackney YOT as part of the government's £100m Youth Crime Action Plan. Around 700 hours of community service have been completed by 51 local offenders since the project began early this year.
