On the Ground: York reparation orders

1 min read Youth Justice
An archaeological reparation scheme in York is helping young offenders to make amends at the same time as learning new skills.

Funding £5,000 from York YOT
Aim To learn life skills and make amends

York youth offending team (YOT) has been working with the local archaeological trust for the past three years to help get troublesome young people back on track.

As part of the project, young people under the supervision of the YOT work on an archaeological dig at Hungate, which is situated in the centre of the historic city. The Hungate site is located just outside where a Roman fortress once stood. Eventually the excavation will uncover the largest area of York to be exposed for more than 25 years.

Through helping excavate the Hungate site, the young people are able to learn vital life skills such as following instructions from others, patience and perseverance, while they help make amends to the community for the harm their offences have caused.
