Project: The Bikeshed Project
Funding: £31,000 from Wakefield Local Education Authority and the Youth Opportunity Fund
Aim: To give young people skills to maintain bikes, teach them about healthy living and to change offending behaviour.
Young people at risk of offending in Wakefield have been fixing bikes in a bid to provide them with skills and steer them away from crime.
The young people are referred by Wakefield Youth Inclusion Project (YIP) and aged between eight and 17. They attend weekly sessions at the Bikeshed, which uses bikes that were either donated or disposed of at the local tip.
The bikes are stripped down, redesigned, spray-painted and MOT-tested by the young people. They then learn about bike maintenance and healthy living, as well as the consequences of offending and substance misuse. The project is a joint venture between a number of organisations, including crime reduction charity Nacro and social inclusion programme Positive Futures.
