I work with homeless young people aged 16 to 19 for Coram Family, in a house in west London, where we have five rooms to let. The aim of the project is to arm young people with the necessary tools to be able to hold their own tenancy. There is a range of life skills that we particularly work on such as budgeting, employment, education, benefits and health.
Once the young person is ready to move on, I help them move to their own property.
What problems do the young people have? Most come from a very difficult background. Often they have little or no contact with their families, and have had to cope with things most people will not be expected to cope with at an early age.
