Hugh Mackintosh, former director of Barnardo's Scotland, was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his work with children and families. He stepped down in September last year after 30 years with the charity.
Among those appointed Officers of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) were Anthony Lawton, chief executive of youth homelessness charity Centrepoint, and Mary Harris, director of the National Grid's young offender programme.
Christopher Heaume, chief executive of Central London Connexions, also received the accolade after devoting more than 30 years of his life to youth work. "I was surprised but very pleased and proud," he said. "It's great for youth work generally and it's good Connexions is being acknowledged in this way."
