Martin Narey receives knighthood as New Year honours recognise sector's work

The government adoption adviser Martin Narey received a knighthood in the New Year's honors list, among more than 150 people recognised for their work with children and young people.

The former chief executive of Barnardo’s was awarded the title for his work with vulnerable people, following a year in which social workers and parents have criticised his recommendations to increase adoptions by relaxing rules and reducing assessments.

Narey said he was “delighted” by the news, which recognised his work as director general for the Prison Service and for Barnardo’s as well as on adoption.

“My work on adoption will continue to be my priority as we enter 2013,” he said. “Much reform is under way and adoptions are on the rise. But there is more to be done to ensure we get permanent and loving homes for more of the children who are waiting."
