New Year's Honours celebrate sector's work

The chief executive of Family Action is among more than 100 people, including youth workers, foster carers and health professionals, awarded a New Year's honour in recognition of their work with children and young people.

David Holmes, who joined the charity last year after stepping down as chief executive of the British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF), was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in recognition of his work with children and families.

Meanwhile Barry and Margaret Mizen were both made Members of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in recognition of the work they do with young people through The Jimmy Mizen Foundation.

They set up the charity after the murder of their 16-year-old son Jimmy in May 2008, with the aim of encouraging young people to play a part in creating safer communities.

The foundation was also recognised at last November's CYP Now Awards, where it picked up the Partnership Working Award.

Matt Dunkley, former director of children's services at East Sussex Council and president of the Association of Directors of Children's Services between April 2011 and March 2012, is also awarded a CBE.

Dr Heather Mackinnon, a former consultant general paediatrician at Whittington Hospital in North London, was awarded an MBE in recognition of her services to child health and child protection.

Dr Mackinnon was one of the first clinicians to raise concerns about Tracey Connelly, mother of Baby Peter Connelly, in Haringey. When Baby Peter was admitted to the hospital in 2006 with severe bruising, the specialist concluded the bruises were not accidental, as reported by his mother, and alerted Haringey social services.

Other notable figures from the sector whose work has been recognised in the honours list include deputy chief executive of the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services Faiza Khan, London Youth deputy chair Roger Merton and BulliesOut chief executive Linda James.
